Is there really a ferry to see the Statue of Liberty for free?
Let’s go straight to answering the main question of this article. Is there a free ferry to Statue of Liberty? And if so, what is it called and why it is free? The answer to this question is YES. There is a ferry in NYC that costs absolutely nothing and has a pretty good view of the Lady Liberty. The name of the service is Staten Island Ferry. Why is it called that? Because it is a ferry that connects every day, 7 days a week, 24 hours a day Manhattan with Staten Island. Surely you know that Manhattan is one of the 5 boroughs of NYC. The other four are Brooklyn, Queens, The Bronx and precisely Staten Istand. The ship that connects Manhattan with Staten Island is the famous Free Ferry to see the Statue of Liberty.
But why is this the Staten Island Ferry Free?
The service connecting Manhattan and Staten Istand allows you to see Miss Liberty relatively well without paying a penny. But why the Staten Island Ferry is free? The reason is that this ship is not offering a tourist service, but a means of connection for commuters who live on Staten Island to go to work in Manhattan. As a result, the city of NYC did not think of this free ferry to Statue of Liberty with the idea of making it attractive to tourists. In fact, it just wanted to offer an alternative service to the car for those who commute from Staten Island to Manhattan every day. The result, however, is that today this service is not only used by commuters. On the contrary, so many tourists take this free ferry to see the Statue of Liberty.
How come you say, though, that the Statue of Liberty can be seen only relatively well from this free ferry?
You may have noticed that when I talk about the Staten Island Ferry I also say that from this boat the Statue of Liberty can be seen yes for free, but only relatively well. In fact, if you expect to take the Staten Island Ferry and pass within walking distance of Lady Liberty, you are wrong. Indeed, with this boat it is true that you can see the world-famous New York landmark; However, it is equally true that the boat ride is relatively far from the monument. So yes, you may well say that the Free Ferry to Statue of Liberty allows you to see it, but not up close.
How to see Miss Liberty up close: two options for your NYC trip
We understood that with the Free Ferry to Statue of Liberty, also called Staten Island Boat, you can see the most famous NYC landmark from a distance. If your goal is to take memorable photos of Miss Liberty by getting within a few feet of it, there are only two options:
- The first is called Statue of Liberty Ferry, and it is not free. This connects Battery Park with Liberty Island. Liberty Island is the island where the Lady Liberty is located. In addition to getting so close to the monument, this service will also allow you to get off on the island. Then on the way back, you can also go to see the Immigration Museum at Ellis Island. Of course, this ferry to the Statue of Liberty is not free. It costs about $25 per person.
- The second is instead to take one of the many cruises that take you right in front of Lady Liberty. Some depart during the day, some at sunset, and some even at night. Are you wondering if these cruise ferries to the Statue of Liberty are free? The answer is no. In fact, these are indeed tourist attractions. But they are one of only two ways you can get close to Miss Liberty and take a beautiful souvenir photo.
As you can well understand, the free ferry to the Statue of Liberty exists, but it will not allow you to get directly to the island where the monument is located. To do this, the only way is to buy a Statue of Liberty Boat ticket, which is not free. Alternatively, you can opt for one of the many very valuable NYC Bay cruises. These NYC Cruises allow you to get within a few feet of Miss Liberty.
Conclusion: Get ready for one of the best NYC experiences
Wrapping up this enlightening guide, let’s revisit what we’ve unfolded about the Free Ferry to Statue of Liberty. I am sure your journey to NYC may involve a lot of activities. However, if viewing Lady Liberty is high on your agenda, the Staten Island Ferry is a fantastic and cost-free solution. Operating 24/7, this ferry service isn’t designed for tourists. However, it is a boat to commute for Staten Island residents to Manhattan. However, its trajectory offers a solid view of the Statue of Liberty, making it a popular choice among tourists.
But note that ‘free’ and ‘close’ are different aspects. The Staten Island Ferry will provide a decent, but not up-close view of the Statue of Liberty. Do your aspirations involve standing within a few feet of the monumental statue and capturing memorable photographs? If yes, you have two options. The first is the Statue of Liberty Ferry (approximately $25 per person). The second is taking one of the many NYC Bay cruises. Both of these are chargeable services, offering closer and more detailed views. As such, there is no Free Ferry to Statue of Liberty that brigs you very close to the monument.
To delve deeper into these choices, I highly recommend reading my other articles and tips on my blog. Also on my Instagram Page you will find useful tips on the Free Ferry to Statue of Liberty.
