5 must-do NYC activities in December

Are you planning a trip to New York City in December? Then you already know that there are so many things to do and it’s really hard to prepare a perfect itinerary and not miss anything. In today’s article we help you out: we have selected for you the 5 must-do NYC activities in December.

Use this article as a starting point for your trip planning. Include these 5 activities and then from there, together with our help (stories and posts on Instagram, new blog articles) plan the rest of your vacation.

1️⃣ Visit 5th Avenue as the sun goes down

When you hear about the 5th Avenue during the Christmas season remember these 2 streets: 59th Street and 49th Street. We are talking about a walk on 5th Avenue for about 10 streets starting from the Plaza Hotel (59th Street) and ending at St. Patrick’s Cathedral & Saks 5th Avenue (49th Street).

On this stretch of street you can completely immerse yourself in Christmas lights and decorations: decorated storefronts, walls of buildings filled with lights, music in the streets, light installations on every corner.

The 5th Avenue and its lights is definitely one of the 5 must-do NYC activities in December.

Holiday Spirit in Manhattan – Guided Tour

Our “Holiday Spirit in Manhattan” tour departs from Times Square by private bus and then travels exactly this route before arriving at Union Square. Here we will do the first of three fantastic stops to discover the best lights and decorations in Manhattan.

Check it out and if you decide to book it, message us first on Instagram (@MyChristmasinNewYork) to receive a dedicated discount code for our Community on Instagram.

The tour departs at 5:30 PM every Tuesday, Thursday and Sunday in December. This is the perfect opportunity to safely discover Manhattan’s most beautiful Christmas decorations with a local tour guide as the sun goes down.

Once you are on 5th Avenue, then you absolutely must visit the Rockefeller Center Christmas Tree and the Saks 5th Avenue Lights and Sounds show.

2️⃣ Meet Santa Claus at Macy’s Santaland

Meeting Santa Claus live is the dream of every child (and lots of adults, too).

To do this, it is not necessary to buy a ticket to Lapland. If you are in New York during the holiday season, then you should definitely visit Macy’s Santaland.

Macy’s Santaland is a real Santa’s village in the heart of Manhattan.

It is located on the eighth floor of Macy’s Herald Square, the most famous department store in all of New York City, just a short walk from the Empire State Building.

Macy’s Santaland can be visited for free and is open from after Thanksgiving until Christmas Eve.

3️⃣ Visit Dyker Heights

We always say it on our Instagram page (@MyChristmasinNewYork): a trip to New York during the holiday season without visiting Dyker Heights in Brooklyn is an incomplete trip.

In Dyker Heights, you can 100% feel the Christmas atmosphere and it is one of the 5 must-do NYC activities in December.

Dyker Heights is a neighbourhood in Brooklyn (a bit far from Manhattan) where residents, for many, many years, have been decorating the outside of their homes (walls, garden, front door) with lots of Christmas lights and decorations.

If you love Christmas movies, with all those houses decorated to excess, you will find just that in Dyker Heights.

Dyker Heights & D.U.M.B.O. – Guided Tour

We at @MyChristmasinNewYork organise a fantastic guided tour every year with a private bus that departs and returns from Times Square. The tour takes you on a discovery of Dyker Heights.

Together with your Tour guide, you will do 1 hour of slow walking in Dyker Heights so you can take as many photos as you want.

If you decide to book a tour with us, send us the “CODE” message first to receive a discount code (up to 20%) dedicated to our community on Instagram.

Our Instagram page is called My Christmas in New York.

4️⃣ Eat in a Christmas-Themed Restaurant

There are thousands of Restaurants in New York City, among the best in the world, where you can try cuisines and specialties from all over the world.

There are, however, some restaurants that are uniquely and specially decorated during the holiday season.

We have written an article in our blog about it, it can be really helpful in giving you ideas on where to eat in New York immersed in Christmas decorations:

5️⃣ Watch the Rockettes’ show

If you come to New York at any time of the year, we recommend attending a Broadway show.

If you come to New York during the holiday season, then we definitely recommend you attend “Christmas Spectacular”.

Christmas Spectacular is the Christmas show with the Rockettes at Radio City Music Hall.

An approximately 1.5-hour show with a completely Christmas theme, perfect for children and adults alike.

This show is beloved by New Yorkers who, if they can, go to see it every year.

The show starts on November 18 and ends in early January.

Find all ticket info HERE.

If you have any questions about the show, feel free to message us at our Instagram page @MyChristimasinNewYork.

These are the 5 things we think are really must-sees if you visit New York City during the Christmas season.
